Merrill Garbus of tUnE-yArDs at Lollapalooza. August 4th, 2012

tUne-yArDs and Sexism

You might or might not know the musical act tUnE-yArDs (but really you should), with their brand of tribal-like vocal harmonies and drum loops, something that’s probably rather different from what you see on this music scene we all seem to be divulging in.

A lot of people seem to be completely surprised knowing that the person who fronts this band is a woman, Merrill Garbus (my queen). The knee jerk reaction most people had was “Oh, she sounded like a man, I wouldn’t have known.” If it stopped there and they continued to enjoy the music, that would’ve been cool. What’s troubling is that people need to add this statement with “oh she looks like a man too lol”, and that comes out quite a lot. The feed on her Coachella stream made me want to throw my laptop out. The YouTube comments used to be a big shitfest but it’s now gotten better.

I have a really huge problem with these people who couldn’t pass through the physical appearance to really enjoy what’s in the music. Jesus fuck, go see a tUnE-yArDs live video, she produces the loops on the spot, without using any prerecorded stuff, she insists on still doing the drumming herself though she can easily hire several percussionists to back her up. That shit is fucking difficult to pull off. If that’s not talent, I don’t know what it is. And people would rather see some talentless hack who’s seen as conventionally attractive but can’t sing to save their life coughlanadelreycough. Just because she doesn’t look like the girls on the pages of Vogue or something doesn’t meen she deserves less attention than her talent warrants.

I’ll bet you my left foot, if a man actually fronted this band, however weird looking he is, he wouldn’t get any of those comments about his looks. Yet because Merrill’s a woman, her whole presence and being will never be detached by how she looks.

Maybe her music is a bit too unconventional for you to listen to. Fine, everyone has their own cup of tea. But you don’t need to be a dick and make comments about how she sounds, how she looks, etc. I bet if she looked like any plebeian generic female pop stars you’d just walk away without saying a thing.
